GETTING A TWO-BED ROOM AT THE MARRIOTT
For DunDraCon 35 and going forward, you can reserve a 2-bed room when you make your reservations at the San Ramon Marriott. This is the industry standard for reservations, and the Marriott is happy to return to it. The first-come system we’ve been using was a special concession from the hotel. It made a lot of sense when it was introduced, as at that time our hotel contract locked in relatively few rooms for DunDraCon guests — a conservative measure designed to reduce business shortfall risk to both the hotel and the convention — and we wanted to be sure that all the 2-bed rooms were included in our total. These days, with essentially the whole hotel locked in, it just adds a layer of lottery and heartache that no one needs.
Points to remember:
- You can’t reserve a 2-bed room if there are none left. More than half the rooms at the San Ramon Marriott are fitted with a single king bed, so demand is going to exceed supply.
- If you’re told no 2-bed rooms are available, go ahead and make your reservation for a king room — then call back at regular intervals to check for cancellations in doubles. But don’t hold out unless your need for the second bed trumps all other considerations to such an extent that you’d rather reserve at the Courtyard or the Homestead Suites across the freeway. The main convention hotel will sell out at some point - probably in early to mid January.
- Please reserve only what you need. There’s no after-market for room scalpers.
